ABOUT
SkillsUSA
SkillsUSA is a vital solution to the growing U.S. skills gap. This nonprofit partnership of students, instructors and industry ensures America has the skilled workforce it needs to stay competitive. Founded in 1965 and endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education, the association serves more than 335,000 member students and instructors each year in middle schools, high schools and colleges. This diverse talent pipeline covers 130 trade, technical and skilled service occupations, the majority STEM-related. More than 600 corporations, trade associations, businesses and labor unions actively support SkillsUSA at the national level.
SkillsUSA programs are integrated into career and technical education through a framework of personal, workplace and technical skills grounded in academics. Local, state and national championships designed and judged by
industry, set relevant standards for career and technical education and provide needed recognition to its students. SkillsUSA also offers technical skill assessments and other workplace credentials. For more information, go to:

District Leadership Conference - October, 2013
In October, 2013, several members and officers from the Grand River
Technical School SkillsUSA attended District Leadership Conference in
Platte City. During the conference, members were divided into
various groups headed by different advisors. The groups discussed different aspects
of SkillsUSA such as committees and competitions. Also within the groups, the
participants learned team building activities. According to SkillsUSA
Local Chapter President Kayla Riddle, "I had a lot of fun meeting new
people, and the leadership skills I learned will definitely help me
during my 2013-2014 school year as morning and afternoon SkillsUSA
President."
At the end of the day, all the participants received a certificate and a
leadership pin for their official dress when competing. Angie Dana
thought it was a "fun and educational trip!" and Hailey Seeley
enthusiastically stated, "I liked it! It was a great way to meet new
people, and we were able to interact with those people. It was also a great
way for us to learn more leadership skills to bring back to our
chapter." -- Submitted by. Savannah Sturguess, GRTS Local Chapter Officer

Leadership Skills Oct 2013
In October, 40 students from Grand River Technical School went to Platte
City for the SkillsUSA District Leadership Training. Two of the State
officers and I had to do a presentation about championships and the
National Meeting. After doing the presentation, everyone went to watch
the District officers do the opening and closing ceremony. The students
fulfilled all the requirements to earn their Leadership Award by attending
this meeting. I am in the Health Services Technology class and I am a
senior at Hale High School. -- Submitted by Shaylee Summers, State SkillsUSA Secretary
The District SkillsUSA leadership conference was a great learning
opportunity for all of the Northwest District. The students were able to
learn about SkillsUSA while learning other leadership skills. They were
also able to meet the District officers including myself, a Health
Services Technology student at GRTS. Three state officers were in
attendance - one of them Shaylee Summers, also a Health Occupation student at
GRTS. Students also got to interact with some of the other students in the
District by playing leadership games/activities. At the end of the day, the
students earned a District Leadership pin from the State. -- Submitted
by Chris Bummer, SkillsUSA Northwest District Officer
