CAPTION: The Mildred Litton 4-H/FFA Community Center received new landscaping on Saturday. This project was among several being done by the county's 4-H clubs.
The Mildred Litton 4-H/FFA Community Center is sporting a new look thanks to grant money and the dedication from a couple of Livingston County 4-H clubs. Members of the Six Pillars and Busy Bees (Avalon) 4-H clubs, along with adults, worked Saturday morning, tearing out overgrown shrubs and brush surrounding the building, planting new shrubs and laying mulch. The landscaping project was part of several projects headed up by various 4-H clubs in the county.
After the Litton Foundation identified projects needing to be done at the Litton Agriculture Campus, the Chillicothe R-2 Agriculture Department and FFA led the effort and delegated projects to various 4-H clubs. Part of ag department's responsibility for using the facilities is that the department maintains the campus, said FFA Adviser Leda Schreiner. The department takes care of the day-to-day maintenance.
The campus is also utilized by 4-H clubs, including three that use the Mildred Litton Building as a regular meeting venue. Any 4-H group is eligible to use the center and all 4-H clubs have been helping with various campus projects. "The 4-H groups were given jobs to do around the Mildred Litton Building for their use of the facilities," Schreiner said.
Other 4-H projects included painting the fence at the Charlie Litton Pavilion (where cattle, sheep and goats are kept during the county fair), painting the wash rack and picnic tables at the shelter houses, and repairing an old bridge to the outdoor classroom. A $500 grant assisted with the landscaping project, as well as Aaron Peel, of Aaron's Lawn and Landscape who dug out the old landscaping and helped prepare the ground for new plantings.
The campus was a busy place on Saturday. In addition to the landscaping at the Mildred Litton building, preparations were being made throughout the campus in preparation of the 2014 Livingston County 4-H and FFA Fair. The fair begins July 11 and continues through July 18.
